78 was an odd year for me DEAD wise, and sorry if I have babbled on about it before with you all (but I guess not you, GC).

I think I have made clear my fav two for my tour yrs (74-82) were in 75 (Jun & Sep). I was much more a "straight song" fan than a "jam" fan at the time, contradictory as it sounds coming from me now! In any case, I can't say that other than listing 75 as the "top" of those yrs, the Oct shows of 78 would probably have ranked below the spring of 77, and the summer/fall of 79 with Brent coming on (recall he didn't sing yet!), but none of this was really based on a solid analysis (if any!??) of the actual performance.

It's difficult to imagine how limited we all were back then in what we Forumites do with such depth and vigor now, so long after the fact. We didn't have access to information about "how good was the concert last month in LA?" or "was Jerry sick last night?" or whatever...

Generally, just as we critique the reviews here for being far too subjective, back then it seemed you ranked a concert first and foremost for the "experience" (ie, who you went with at the top, what you did around it, what you took at it [though again, geek that was, I usually remained relatively straight at shows--very serious about taking it all in. Note that so many others say something akin to "great show, though I don't recall ANY of it!???] and at most a set list for those that had the ability to keep notes...a few friends of mine did this every show).

Anyhow, I have a hard time looking back at the shows here at the Archive and deciding that I saw a good one or a bad one, other than by hearing from you all that it was a good run or what have you...my rankings are based entirely on my personal experiences at the time. In fact, I don't think I have listened to anywhere close to all the shows I attended to even assess what they were really like...
